Strength & Flexibility: Introduction to the Monkey Gym, Chattanooga
Intro to the Monkey Gym
—Strength & Flexibility
Presented by Kit Laughlin
The foundation of any strengthening work is sound biomechanics. The Monkey Gym work spans explicit rehabilitation through to the development of elite athletes; we all fall somewhere on that continuum, and a good strengthening program needs to begin with this goal.
Day 1 and 2 will teach you unique and effective core/spine alignment and strengthening drills, done both standing, supine, and prone. Many past workshop attendees have confessed to feeling TA (transversus abdominis) and internal obliques for the first time during this segment!
We progress this heightened awareness to more difficult exercises, including the ‘plank’; these can be done in very easy versions (done from the knees) through harder (from the feet) to difficult (prone, off the feet, hands on the low Roman rings).
This core session is augmented by a comprehensive foot alignment drill that progresses to knee tracking, lunging, and eventually to stepping up (and the perhaps more important stepping down) exercises.
Day 3 introduces gluteus maximus activation, and the critical relation to the hip flexors. The next session focuses on pushing and pulling exercises, more difficult Roman ring movements and static holds, and the crucially important grip strength drills.
These are complemented by internal and external rotator cuff balancing and strengthening exercises, to make sure that shoulders can adapt to these increased demands safely. This is an indicative guide; the actual exercises done on any given day will depend on the group’s collective ability.
One of the foundations of the Monkey Gym system is the belief that bodyweight exercises, when made appropriately difficult by manipulating lever lengths and stability bases, and only using minimal equipment, will provide all the strength work you will ever need. This workshop will give you the direct experience of this claim. See you there!
