Release Headache Tension with this Gentle Neck Stretch

 

Have you ever been thinking about a problem and felt your scalp tighten?

This used to happen to me all the time.

I’d be focused a little too intently, and before long, my scalp muscles were squeezing my head, and soon after, a headache would follow.

I don’t get those “scalp-squeezing” headaches anymore.

I learned I CAN’T think my way to a solution, but I CAN think my way to a headache.

Now, when I start to feel the scalp-squeezing kick in, it’s my cue to take a break, whether it’s from working on an email, thinking about a tough conversation, or trying to come up with a solution to a tough problem.

Our bodies constantly communicate with us, letting us know what’s needed at any moment.

You probably know what hunger feels like. It’s distinct. When you feel it, you know it’s time to eat.

This is a great example of your body communicating with you.

This communication even has a scientific name: interoception.

So the next time you’re working at the computer and feel your shoulders tighten, or you’ve been sitting, and your lower back starts to ache, that’s your cue to take a break.

It's time to get up, move around and change what you’re doing.

You could even try the exercise in today’s video, where you’ll learn a gentle stretch to help release the muscles at the base of your skull, the sub-occipitals.

Too much tension in these little muscles contributes to tension headaches, and this is one of my favorite exercises to help them release.
