Special Session: Plant Your Feet and Grow Your Practice

Green Spiky Ball and Feet

Since my Pilates practice began in 2001, I've known the feet were important. The thing is, I never understood exactly why. Aside from using my feet to physically rush though my day, I never really thought much about them, or cared why they might be useful for anything else. And in any case, I thought Pilates was just about the spine and core, right? 😉

In March 2012 my interest in feet and their critical role in my life was piqued dramatically when I attended two workshops. I learned something new that completely changed my practice for the better. This was such a big deal because I got to see the direct relationship between foot and ankle alignment and the performance of the rest of my body.

At this point, I knew the feet were something I could no longer ignore.

As it turns out, the way we move and the way we respond physically to everything is very heavily determined by our feet; while I don’t want to be melodramatic, I can’t emphasize enough how the alignment of the feet determines short-term success in many areas, including Pilates, but also long-term health overall.

The feet play a HUGE role in the way our body moves through space and how we respond to physical challenges. When you understand the function of your feet and fix your foot alignment (trust me, no one has perfect foot alignment, least of all me 🙂 ) it allows the core musculature to come on board and align in a very natural way.

The Reason for the Spring (Or Lack Thereof) In Your Step
There are 26 bones, 56 ligaments and 32 joints in each foot. These bones, joints and ligaments work together to create a dynamic tripod that springs and rebounds with every step you take.

If the alignment in the foot and ankle is off, this will negatively affect that spring system and you may no longer be walking with a spring in your step; plus, your glutes might not be activating as you walk either. In many cases the low back takes on the job of walking and, over time, this will not only hurt, but possibly even create chronic problems in your low back and spine.

This is all incredibly cool and valuable information and I can’t wait to share even more with you.

In fact, if you know me you know I have a major passion for this kind of stuff. And this idea in particular is such a big deal that I've decided to give a free class on foot and ankle alignment and how to use this in your Pilates practice and beyond.
